Scientist predict the end of the world in 2012?

So I have been reading all this stuff about the world ending in 2012. Never really belied it until I read that the storms that have been happening are part of the world ending. I read today in the sun magazine that September it starts with a floor, than an earthquake, hurricanes, tornadoes, states that have never gotten snow will get snow and all this weather stuff. So I came home did some research and found this http://buburuza.net/2008/08/seven-reasons-the-world-will-end-in-2012-proven-scientifically/comment-page-1/#comments
7 reasons why the world will end. The ones that freaked me out are 2-5. Is this true? Made up? Could it happen? Are we in trouble? I just want to know if there is a big chance.

The bible says the date can't be predicted so don't worry.

Has anyone heard the myth of the world ending on December 21, 2012?

The world supposedly is supposed to come to an end on 12/12/2012 due to solar issues. Go to youtube and type in 2012.
My grandson & myself thank you all for your answers. Some were pretty good. Hopefully this will help w/his confusion. He asked the question, but I will be picking the best answer for him since it's my computer & he isn't here.

The Mayan Calendar ends in 2012 on that day. The Mayan calendar worked on the assumption that time was cyclical and that when the world ended, typically through some great catastrophe, the world would restart anew. So while the Mayan calendar predicts that some great catastrophe would befall the Earth on that day, it is not technically the end of the world but a new beginning.

Is the world really going to end in 2012?

I know people have asked this before, but I watched the History Channel last night, and they gave the reasoning of MANY oracles, including the Mayans. Also, something about Earth aligning with the sun is going to cause our poles to shift and earthquakes and such....

ONCE AND FOR ALL PEOPLE,

No Maya prophecy or Maya book ever predicted the world would end on December 23, 2012. The Maya calendar only states that the BAKTUN ends on that day. (400 year period)
But there ARE calculations, written in books, that talk about dates thousands of years in the future.
Don't believe everything you read about the Maya civilization.

Just read everything you can read, and improve your understanding. Read books by the late Dr. Linda Schele, University of Austin, Tx.

I personally own more than 1000 books about Maya history and archaeology.

I QUOTE FROM: "A Forest of Kings", by Linda Schele, David Friedel, 1990. (page 82)
..'...In the near future Maya time also approaches one of its great benchmarks. December 23, 2012, will be 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin, the day when the 13 baktuns will end and the Long Count cycles return to the symmetry of the beginning. The Maya, however, did not conceive this to be the end of this creation, as many have suggested. Pacal, the great king of Palenque, predicted in his inscriptions that the eightieth Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated eight days after the first eight-thousand year cycle in the Maya calendar ends. In our time system, this will end on October 15, 4772.'

Pacal the Great died on August 31, 683, age 80. The Maya civilization ended in the 9th Century AD, when all construction and heiroglyph writing ceased. No Spaniards were around at that time.

2012 doomsday (end of the world or just another y2k)?

2012 dooms is one of the most controversial theorize out there, its date was predicted by nostradomis, the ancient maya and about every-other culture out there says its time for a doomsday. even the bible(code) seems to claim it is near. it even seems possible in scientific terms. scientist beleive that on the morning of december 21, 2012 the sum will rise through the equator of the galaxy, and when this happens, they think it will be like when you change from north to south hemispheres on earth the water going down drains spins in opposite ways so they think that earth will experience a pole shift which will be catastrophic because it will cause massive storms, earthquakes, and tsunamis. so, what do you believe. end of the world as we know it, or just another y2k?

Actually, it is not as serious as Y2K. Y2K had some logic behind it (computer software not being able to handle the date). This was tested on many older computers, by changing the date etc, and found to be a possible threat. Most computers, mainly newer types, were found not to be affected. But Y2K had some basis in fact, although the level of danger was heightened, possibly to sell more upgrades etc.
This 2012 Doomsday prediction is from some people's interpretation of a cycle of the Mayan calendar, which finishes on that day (and starts again). The Mayans did not predict the end of the world, just as it did not end the last time this great cycle ended and started some 26000 years ago (I think). The equator of the galaxy is not some thin line to break through, and assuming anyone back in the Mayan's age knew enough about its thickness is ridiculous. The plane of the galactic equator is measured in light years, and it is not something which we are "on one side today, the other side tomorrow", so to speak.

As I respond each time I see this question - I will sleep through this "end of the World" like I have slept through all the others.
