2012 survival skills What do you bring.............?
Since 2012 is so much on some people minds I thought I would ask a question about it.
Say for instance that globally, something happens and technology as we know it is history. Back to the dark ages.
What skills that you have now do you bring to the table suited for the survival of the species?
I bring the skills of knowing that there is absolutely no way for technology to revert to the level of the early first millennium. There is a line between normal hypothetical questions and blatantly silly ones. You crossed it.
survival skills Where do you learn survival skills?
I love surivival shows and the way they can live out in the woods, deserts make fires, hunt food, make water ect and survive i know that the military teaches these skills but other than that is there anywhere to learn them?
The best author I have found in survival skills teaching is Tom Brown, Jr. He also teaches classes and has many former students teaching classes also throughout the U.S. Do a search on Tom Brown, Jr. and you will find his books. Here is the web address for his school:

What are some good survival skills, when you are in Michigan's wilderness?
Things that you can eat to survive or make with a knife or hachet. How to survive cold nights. How to skin rabbits, ect....
You are actually opening a huge can of knowledge to obtain true survival skills. If it were that easy, everyone would survive the wilderness. To narrow things down to "basics", water is the singe most important item. You can go a couple weeks without food if needed. Water should be first priority. Second, If rescuers may have an idea where you might be, stay put. Conserve energy and let them find you. Wandering around aimlessly will just make things worse. Don't panic. Think about your needs. If it is shelter, make shelter. Keep motivated, (Think of family, friends, loved ones, etc). This keeps a person going. Listen and look for evidence of where you are. Listen and look for aircraft and what direction they are going, at night, look for lights (for example). If you have to travel, leave evidence of which direction you are going, (like making a big arrow with rocks). Just a few tips. Again, this is a huge topic.
survival skills How many of you still remember your survival skills?
How to build a small campsite, a lean-two, even a modest garden?
I do. It's been about 10 years since I had to "live off the land"--sort to speak--but the old habits never have died off, or been forgotten.
Even now, I'm still preparing--just in case.
How about the rest of you?
I was never in the girl scouts thanks! When it comes to surviving in the wilderness, I've got my tent, my rucksack and my sleeping bag - as for food, I guess I'll be looking for things I can eat cold that stay edible for a while, because I'm not building a fire on my own!

Do you think we owe it to ourselves to learn primal survival skills?
What if one day, there is a great disaster and civilization as you know it is at a wreck until we can rebuild?
Just a thought!
I agree with you. You never know what will or could happen.
I have always said I want to be at ground zero or far enough away to not be effected immediately.
I have a ten year old and I think we have been kind of preparing her for survival. Not fanatically mind you but we camp and we watch the survival shows and we discuss some of the thing that we would do and the like. 911 really effected her generation so it isn't a foreign concept that you might have to make it work someday.
