I would give it six to nine years before the next big scare. Long enough for the middle schoolers of today to have grown out of it and long enough for the kids who are now 3 to 7 years old and know nothing of this to be the next crop of victims.
There will not be the Mayans to lie about this time but I'm sure they will think of something. There are always the old standbys, the books of Daniel, Revelation, Nostradamus and similar obscure rantings. The Mayan calendar doesn't end, it just recycles. The Maya didn't predict anything for 2012. The Maya didn't make prophecies. Their calendar was used for things like when to plant and harvest their crops and predicting eclipses.
