maya Pottery

Is it "Maya" or "Mayans" when talking about the people of this civilization?
I'm currently making my way through a history book, and I noticed that it uses "Maya" when talking about the people, and the word "Mayan"to describe things of the culture (e.g. Mayan pottery, Mayan houses).
This jumped out at me, because I have always refered to the people as "The Mayans" or "The Mayan People." Should I just use "Maya" instead, or does it matter?
'Maya' would be correct for the people and anything pertaining to them.
'Mayan' is colloquially used, but is normally regarded as incorrect by academics. The modern Maya themselves use the term 'Maya'.

here is the english:
Joe and Ernesto arrive at the museum and pay the 10 dollar fee. They first see ceramics, some hundreds of years old. Joe saw under one of the pieces of pottery a description which read: “This vase was created by the Mayans. The Mayans were a relative latecomer to ceramic development, as their ceramic arts flourished in the Maya Classic Period, or the second to tenth century AD. One important site in southern Belize is known as Lubaantun, that boasts particularly detailed and prolific works.” Both Ernesto and Joe were very impressed with the art work at the museum and made their way over to the sculptures.
please do not use an online translator as they are never 100% right and have let me down in the past. Besides, i wouldn't be asking this if i could just put it in a translator. *spanish speakers only*
