If something profound will indeed happen in the 2012 Mayan prophecy?
Would you want it to be proof/news of the existence of a great afterlife...or not?
Just look at the way the world is going, and it's more likely every day that something profound WILL happen in 2012.
Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't think that the Mayans so much prophesied anything as that they ... well, just ENDED their calendar in 2012.
All that aside, though, on to answering your question: I figure that I'll find out sooner or later about the afterlife, so I do not think that I would need 2012 to be any kind of "proof". If what happens is what everyone thinks is going to happen, then we ALL will find out about the afterlife; if it starts in 2012, then we'll know, and if it DOESN'T start in 2012, we'll all still know (or NOT know, as the case may be).
In either event, we'll be dead, though, so there's no real difference.

Thought, Does the Obama presidency reflect on the mayan 2012 doomsday prophecy? hope not.?
The last year of the Obama Presidency falls on the Mayan calender dooms day. is there any significance to this?
I think that the doomsday prophecy is a very interesting idea, as many people have been talking about the the chaos that will supposedly occur in 2012 as of late. There are many people who believe that Obama is the "antichrist", and will lead America to her doom because of his political ties, beliefs, inexperience, and willingness to meet with terrorists, but I would be more concerned about other countries and their reactions to him/his decisions (as well as America was a whole), and Obama/the government's reactions to other countries' choices (such as the Russia/Poland missile conflict that is going on now, or the sneaky maneuvering in the Kremlin that may lead to Putin becoming president again). I really hope that the Mayan doomsday isn't true, but there certainly may be "clues" here... like his lack of experience, the Middle East conflicts, Russia's new goals to attack EU countries and American allies, lots of new secret nuclear activity and deals, the scary fact that there may be a political reason as to WHY Putin wants to become president AGAIN, as well as the other calamities that are going on in the world right now. However, one could argue that Obama will "save" us from a Mayan doomsday, or that the 45th president-elect will be the cause (as the Mayan doomsday is predicted to occur in December, after the 2012 election). Then again, some people do think that the whole thing is a hoax, or that instead of a "doomsday" there will be some type of enlightenment, world golden age, or other event. Personally I really hope that there isn't a doomsday and that no one person is the cause of any chaos that might ensue in late 2012.
