why did the maya Calendar Stop at 2012 December 21?

Does it mean its the end of the world?!?!

Yes, it stops or ends in 2012. But it is important to know that the Mayan concept of time differs from our western view of time. In the west we view time as being linear: having a beginning and an end.

Mayans viewed time cyclical. Once one cycle ends, another one begins, kind of like a wheel.

Hope the links below help figure it out! :)

is the end of the world in 21 december 2012?and what about the maya calendar?

end??

Its a good question that has been asked since pretty much the beginning of time. Some people have 'calculated', used the stars, or whatever other methods. As everyone said, no one knows for sure. The reason why the calander may have ended there is because of the mayan collapse. There calendars have been considered to be very accurate, but when the civilization began to collapse, alot was abandoned. Whats intresting though is that when I was taking a class, one of the geologists was talking about how we veiw things from a fly's point of view. To the earth's time spand we live that seven days of a fly's. So the 'end of the world' can come in many different forms to alot of people from the begining of time. Look at how devistating volcanoes are. The loss of the Menoan civilization because of Santorini, Pomeii and Herculanium to Mount Vesuivius. To them that would have been the end of the world. To the Early Christians Nero must have seemed like the anitchrist cause of all the persacutions. The Black Death that hit in the 1300's nearly wiping out whole civilizations.

The 'end of the world' may not actually be some huge armageddon that we all imagine it to be. Even if it may seem like that to us when it comes, or seemed like it to those that lived through one. Who can say.
