Mayans were known mathematical and astronomical systems. They came up with the 365 day calander over 2,000 years ago. they did not anticipate leap year in the calender so every 4 years there calendar will be off by a day.
December 21, 2012 is not the end of the world according to Mayans but December 21, 2012 is simply the first day of the 14th b'ak'tun.
The calendar starts over on that day.the mayan calander is in its 13th b'ak'tun. A b'ak'tun contains 144,000 days, equivalent to 394.25 years. The Classic period of Maya civilization occurred during the 8th and 9th baktuns of the current calendrical cycle. The current (13th) baktun will end, or be completed, on 13.0.0.0.0 (December 21, 2012 using the GMT correlation). This also marks the beginning of the 14th baktun, as such a term is usually used among Mayanists.
The 14th b'ak'tun will end in the year 2407 and the 15th b'ak'tun will be begin.
Some uneducated conspricay idiots just seen that the 13th b'ak'tun calendar ended in 2012 and ingored the fact it starts over. Every 394.25 years the mayan calendar will end and start over into the next b'ak'tun.

Does the Mayan prophecy freak you out? 2012?
I don't believe the world will end on December 21,2012 but the prophecy does give me the willies. The mayans were highly advanced in astronomy, math, and science. There are also books about Bible codes stating that the Earth will be destroyed by a comet or asteroid in 2012. Some have even claimed that 2012 will be the beginning of the religious apocalypse brought on by God. Does any of this sort of freak you out since its only 3 years away?
I don't know why people continue to refer to Dec 21st 2012 as Doomsday.. It is the end of the Mayan Long Count Calender, the beginning of a new era, not the end of the world..
All the disasters which are happening throughout the world right now have been foretold, even in the Bible..

The Church knows this is happening and they are calling it the 2nd coming among other things, just another con really, they know their time is up...
