2012 prophecy

Have any of you researched or found info on the 2012 prophecy?
Anyone out there with any understanding of planet alignment and galaxy alignments in DEC..2012?
I have asked astronomers and astro-physics guys all over the world of the possible affects of our galaxy entering the center of the milky way and if it going to happen and NO ONE will give me a straight answer..
Okay, this is as straight as it gets.
Let me begin by saying that there are no laws requiring that what is printed on a webpage needs to be honest or true. There are no requirements to place a header on the top stating that the following is fact, fiction, opinion, unverified hypothesis, etc.
Second, there exists no 2012 prophesy. (Pay attention here Lee K) The Mayans nor their calendar NEVER mention anything about an end of the world. They had words that recorded lengths of time just like we have day, week, month, year, etc. One of the words that they used was called a baktun. Their calendar cycles repeated after 13 baktuns. 2012 marks the end of 13 baktuns - that's all. If you want to speak about prophesy, then you are speaking about internet disinformation and lies. I don't know of any scientist who wants to spend his time disproving internet lies. That would be up to each individual to exercise common sense, good judgement, lack of gullability, and show even a small display of intellect by investigating webpage authors and their information presented before simply accepting what is read as fact, incorporating into your beliefs, and repeating what you have read like it has now become undeniable fact. That's how we get people like Katie.
When the history channel or discovery channel speaks of 'the Mayan prophies' they are only doing so to make the program contents sound mysterious so you keep watching. Keep in mind that tv shows are written by people for entertainment purposes. It takes a linguistics expert to interpret Nostradamus quatrains. In the end, such remains an interpretation only as his quatrains were intentionally obscure and generalized. Many persons are jumping onto the 2012 bandwagon to sell some books. The Nostradamus connection is no exception.
Regarding planetary alignment, this is pure fiction. A proper investigation into ALL such doomsday claims for 2012 will that they are all fictitious. NASA has jpl of where the planets will be if you type in any day of any year. Search the year 2012 for yourself and then ask yourself how much truth exists among 2012 websites.
Any astronomer knows that a planetary alignment can mathematically NEVER happen within the 12 billion year life span of our Sun. HOWEVER, ultraviolets answer is correct. A complete planetary alignment would raise Earth tides 1 1/2 inches. If you visit a website hyping some planetary alignment (or if your name is Katie) you can be assured that the site is based upon fiction. (There are tens of thousands).

Regarding galaxy alignment, this is a visual phenomenon that has been twisted to sound like a physical phenomenon by those who lack any understanding yet want to sound as if they know that the end of the world is here.
There are many things in the sky that appear to be true when, in fact, we know better. A simple example is how the Sun appears to go around the Earth. The truth is that the Earth rotates. It appears from Earth that the stars and constellations change positions throughout the year. This is because Earth revolves around the Sun.
Similarly, it appears that the Sun rises during winter solstice as the Milky Way gets lower on the horizon. This is caused by precession. This is an APPARENT alignment as viewed from Earth. This is in no way a physical alignment.
The Sun has risen with the Milky Way many many times in recent centuries. It is not an uncommon nor unusual phenomena. But because of the measurement of precession, one can pick a certain day (in this particular case the winter solstice december 21) and track when the Sun will rise when the Milky Way appears low on the horizon. That occurs anywhere between 1980 and 2019. 2012 will not be some magical year when it will happen for a few seconds and then suddenly be over (of course with the end of the world happening at that precise moment).

If you are visiting a website and they are hyping a galactic alignment, that is your first clue that it is a trash website.
The Mayan were astronomers. They saw the Milky Way. They noticed the dark spots in the middle. They did not know as we do today that this darkness is caused by dust. So, as with the Big Dipper and the North Star, they built a myth around it. They imagined it to be an alligator jaws and called it a 'birthing place'. This is why the Sun rising there was important to them. It is not known why they chose the winter solstice. Perhaps it is only fitting that the Sun seems to be returning or being reborn (returning to longer days after the day of shortest daylight hours) when it seems to rise also from the birthing place.
It would be a day to celebrate. The rebirths would culminate in a new age. One based upon spirituality.
The end. If you want killer asteroids and Nibiru and pole reversals and aliens you can find plenty of that. But not from the Mayans nor their calendar. You can find that from good old people living today. Everything out there from psychics to doomsayers to fiction writers right at your fingertips on the world wide web.
Choose your sites wisely. It remains up to YOU- not scientists- to dispell these falsehoods.

How many problems will this 2012 doomsday prophecy cause?
I remember reading about a similar prediction that happened in the 1800s'. People killed themselves and their family members, because they believed the dead would go to heaven first. Other people sold all their earthly possessions. It was basic chaos. Do you think some people will show the same behaviour this time?
I "predict" that it will be a complete flop - except for the folks who are milking the gullible. Like the above poster, I would remind you of the Y2K fiasco. Surely we know better by now?
