survival techniques What are the survival techniques of a Manta Ray?
I need to know how the Manta Ray adapted to its home and what are its survival techniques. If you know please answer, and please try to answer before 2-2-09. Thanks!
Manta rays are an active swimmer, occupying all parts of the water column, particularly mid water and near surface - whereas bottom dwelling and more sedentary species of rays would be more susceptible to capture by trawl operations
+ · Manta rays may have little affinity for open deep water and prefer areas in contact with coastal or reef/island features, areas where trawlers do not work While little is known about the current status of manta rays in Australia it is assumed because their distribution appears to cover a broad geographic area and there are few identified threats, that their populations are secure. Manta rays are not currently protected by any fisheries legislation in Australia.

Order : Batoidea
Family : Mobulidae
Genus and Species : Manta birostris
Average Length : Up to 16 feet
Average Wingspan : Up to 20 feet
Average Weight : Up to 3000 lbs
Diet : Mainly shrimp, plankton and small fish
Lifespan : Unknown
The manta ray is the largest member of the ray family. The ray's eerie behavior of circling small fishing boats has earned it the name of "devilfish," though the manta ray is one of the most docile creatures in the sea. The ray's image and how it's fins propel it through the water add a sense of curiosity and mystery to the manta ray's character. Although many jump out of the water and accidently destroy small fishing boats, folk tales of them killing divers are falsely told.
Food, Feeding and Hunting : The manta utilizes it's gills when it feeds. As it sucks water in, the gills open and allow water to be pumped out, while the plankton is restrained inside the ray's mouth. The gill arches then siphon the plankton to the manta ray's stomach for natural processing. A unique feeding habit has been observed when a manta encounters a shoal of fish. It opens it's mouth and moves into the shaol like a dark shadow. Swallowing as many fish as it can.
Breeding : Manta rays bear live young, from single fertilized eggs. It is believed that manta ray's do not breed until they reach a certain sexual maturaty which occurs when the pectoral fins reach between 13-to-15 feet. The manta ray has no specific breeding season, thus males and females breed year round. The new born mantas are fairly large, weighing in at about 25 lbs and poccessing an incredible wingspan of 4 feet.
Distribution : The manta ray is common in both inshore and offshore waters of the western Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
Conservation : Manta rays are not considered to be sport fish and are generally left alone by fisherman. They have no commercial value and there population is unknown.

Fire Starting Techniques-- Survival The Samoan Way
school prj. OUR PLANE CRASHED IN THE BOREAL FORest. WHAT ARE SOME SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES?
Hmm? That's a very open-ended question.
The first thing is to stay near the plane. It will be easy for rescuers to find and you have a much better chance of being spotted that way. Unless you're really certain of where you are and where the nearest major road or town is located do not attempt to hike out.
If it's winter you're also going to want a fire immediately. The smoke will make you even more visible and the heat will keep you alive. Birch bark is the most flammable thing you will find; birch trees look white and peeling. Dried weeds work as well, as may pine needles. If you have matches or a cigarette lighter, good. If not use a thin piece of wire or steel wool and a battery out of a laptop or any other device you still have.
Relighting a fire can be problematic. Try to keep it going 24 hours a day, and if you can't "bank" it by covering some hot coals with dirt.
There's not much to eat in a boreal forest. Depending on the season there may be blueberries and dandelion leaves and acorns as well as some wild versions of carrots and turnips. Freshwater mollusks are easy to find and collect if you can get to a clear stream. In the winter finding food in a boreal forest is absolutely brutal; bring your powerbars.
Oh, and mushrooms. Unless you crashlanded with an expert on mushroom identification this is dangerous. Resist the temptation to eat them even if they look safe.
Drinking water. If it's winter you can melt snow in a cut-open can or some other thing. If things are melted try to drink from clear and swift streams. Boiling your water will not hurt. DO NOT attempt to boil water in a plastic bottle like Bear Grylls.
Let me extend that further. Don't imitate Bear Grylls period. Don't eat found animal carcasses of unknown freshness, don't try to climb large rock faces alone with no safety gear, etc. If it looks stupid it probably is stupid.
