Is 2012 (the end of the world) really going to happen?

No, it's not going to end. If there were anything like a planet roaming around out there coming at us, it would be very visible at this point. Solar flares do not erupt far enough and energetic enough to destroy us. The worst thing that it could do would be to temporarily shut down our power grid. The "galactic alignment" isn't actually happening -- it's just "close enough" that people scream about it, and even when it does (which happens about 18 trillion years or so in our solar system -- so it can never happen, because we won't be around that long, and the whole Universe is only 13 - 17 billion years old), nothing strange happens with gravity, at least not enough to rip us apart. Pole shifts, as in geographic shifts cannot happen, because of rotational momentum. Geomagnetic shifts (north magnetic pole and south magnetic poles) can happen, but they're well documented at taken usually about 10,000 years to happen -- they do not instantaneously flip. If they did? Nothing would happen anyway, because the magnetosphere would still be there. We'd just have to reset our compasses. There are NO extinction events in the fossil record related with any of the many geomagnetic reversals that we know have happened, and when. The Earth can neither spontaneously explode, nor implode. There is absolutely no physical basis or even possibility of that happening.
There are no calendars that predict the end of the world. NONE. There are no calendars that line up to all say the same day or year that *anything* is going to happen. People think that the Mayan calendar signals the end, because it stops. It doesn't stop. 2012 is their version of New Year's Eve -- midnight comes, everybody kisses, possibly has sex with a total stranger, and everyone goes out and buys a new calendar for whatever the next year is. So you toss out your 2010 and buy one for 2011. That's it, the Mayan calendar flips over. Which, incidentally, is the Mesoamerican calendar, not the Mayan calendar, but the two anthropologists who started this whole thing thought that Mayan was more "edgy" to get a paper published.
To put it bluntly, if you want to worry about something, your 0.0012% chance of dying from the common flu in the United States is infinitely higher than your dying because the Gregorian calendar, which was arbitrarily set in 1582 by a pope, says that we're currently in the year 2012.
Estimates of a *definite* end of the world range from 5 - 7 billion years in the future, when the Sun finally dies.

umm i found this website on line so far if you add Y2K the world was supposed to end 14 times now + it is supposed to end this year and it is supposed to end another 16 times by 2040. here is the site and im just saying that if it hasnt ended by now why would it end 2012

It just proves that a lot of people have never read the Bible which says that no one knows when that time is, not even Christ. It will end when you least expect it.
